European Garden Award at Jardins de la Ballue

Selected by the EGHN, the Gardens of la Ballue won the 2nd prize of the European Garden Award !
The international jury of this award has selected the gardens of La Ballue in the category « Restoration, Enhancement or Development of a Historic Park or garden”.

The finalists within each category have been honoured on the afternoon of the 15th September 2017 on the site of the International Gartenausstellung IGA in Berlin.

The first prize was awarded to the gardens of Peterhof in Russia.
Previous winners included Herrenhaüsser Gärten in Germany and Hestercombe Gardens in UK.

The European Garden Heritage Network EGHN was started in 2003 and now includes about 190 parks and gardens in 14 countries (www.eghn.eu).

Joint award by the European Garden Heritage Network (EGHN) and the project leader Schloss Dyck Foundation, Centre for Garden Art and Landscape Design in Juechen (Germany) (www.stiftung-schloss-dyck.de).

Annual award, started in 2010.
The selection of finalists is not limited to the sites, partners and countries within the EGHN network.

Nominations are made by jury members and by requests from parks and gardens.

The jury includes 9 members from Germany, the UK, Sweden and Italy (landscape architects, EGHN, journalists, sponsor).

The European Garden Award has four categories :
A) Restoration, Enhancement or Development of a Historic Park or Garden.
The first category looks at historic parks and gardens that have been subject to exemplary restoration, enhancement or development measures or activities related to social inclusion, education, environment or visitor services.
B) Innovative Contemporary Concept or Design of a Park or Garden
The second category identifies high quality and innovative contemporary concepts and designs of parks and gardens already implemented or in progress of realisation.
C) Special Award of the Schloss Dyck Foundation
In a third category, the Special Award of the Schloss Dyck Foundation, Centre for Garden Art and Landscape Design, is focussing on a new theme each year, in 2017 on “Education in a historic park or garden”.
D) Large Scale Green Concepts

Since 2014, a fourth category awards innovative large scale green policies, measures or concepts that – for instance – safeguard green values or enhance green public areas for the revitalisation of a city or region.

In 2017, finalists in Category A and B:
A: De Nieuwe Ooster (Netherlands), Peterhof (Russia) and La Ballue (France)
B: Parco Dora (Italy), Crossrail Place Roof Garden (UK) the park at the new concert hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (Poland).
